Job Description
Mid-Level Embedded Software Engineer
Position Summary
We're seeking a Mid-Level Embedded Software Engineer to support its Software Defined Automation (SDA) initiative. This team develops low-level embedded software that serves as the bridge between hardware and software within Rockwell's industrial automation products.
The SDA platform is focused on creating cloud-enabled automation solutions that allow customers to deploy new controller features and capabilities through software rather than purchasing new hardware. Similar to how Tesla delivers software-based feature enhancements to vehicles, Rockwell is developing automation solutions that can be upgraded and extended through software deployments.
This role is heavily focused on embedded platform development, including RTOS functionality, memory management, device drivers, hardware abstraction layers, and controller-level software development.
Current Project
The team is currently focused on Rockwell's Software Defined Automation (SDA) roadmap.
Previous work centered around Input/Output (IO) product development, which has now been completed and released. Current initiatives involve building next-generation controller functionality that can operate across multiple hardware platforms, providing customers with greater flexibility and reducing dependence on specific PLC hardware configurations.
Team Responsibilities
Engineers on this team work at the lowest levels of the software stack and are responsible for:
Agile Environment
- SAFe Agile Framework
- Two-week sprint cycles
- Daily standups
- Sprint planning sessions
- Bi-weekly retrospectives
Why the Opening Exists
This is a backfill position replacing a previous employee.
The prior individual struggled with the embedded systems aspects of the role, relied heavily on AI-generated code, and was unable to independently execute embedded software development work at the level required by the team. The hiring manager is seeking a candidate with strong foundational embedded engineering experience who can contribute independently.
