Job Description
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced ACL Firewall Engineer to design, implement, and maintain secure, compliant network environments for Veteran Affairs (VA) operations. This role requires deep expertise in Access Control Lists (ACLs), firewall policy design, and network segmentation, with a focus on protecting PHI, PII, and VA Sensitive data. The engineer will collaborate with cross-functional IT teams to structure, implement, and maintain ACL configurations across VA networks, applying federal security standards and best practices.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, implement, and manage firewall ACLs to ensure VA network security and compliance.
- Review ACLs and firewall policies to protect against unauthorized access and cyber threats.
- Develop firewall policies and procedures aligned with VA and federal security standards.
- Collaborate with network engineers, system administrators, and security personnel to build/update ACL configurations.
- Conduct ACL audits to assess compliance with security requirements.
- Assist in incident response and remediation for firewall-related security events.
- Provide technical documentation, training, and support on ACL management.
- Integrate identity-related systems (SAML, Active Directory, LDAP) into firewall policy design.
- Stay current with emerging firewall technologies, threats, and best practices.
- Develop structured documentation and workflows for ACL/firewall management.
- Apply security architecture concepts, diagrams, and modeling techniques to firewall solutions.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Math, or equivalent.
- 10+ years of IT/cybersecurity experience (or 18+ years in lieu of degree).
- Proven experience designing, implementing, and managing firewall ACLs.
- Strong background in firewall policy design, compliance, and threat mitigation.
- Experience collaborating with cross-functional IT/security teams.
- Hands-on experience conducting ACL audits and supporting incident response.
- Knowledge of identity integrations (SAML, AD, LDAP) influencing firewall policies.
- Strong documentation, training, and stakeholder communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience integrating open-source or emerging security tools into firewall environments.
- Experience supporting firewall technologies within DevOps or automated deployment pipelines.
- Prior experience working with the VA or federal agencies.
