Job Description
We are seeking a senior-level software engineer to augment our engineering team as we continue building the core platform supporting a multi-site biospecimen collection and processing initiative within higher education health research.
The application serves as the operational system connecting biospecimen collection sites, laboratory processing systems, and downstream research platforms. It orchestrates the movement of research data between institutional systems while building a searchable catalog of biospecimens available for research.
This is not a traditional line-of-business CRUD application. It is an evolving research data platform implemented as a modern Ruby on Rails application.
The successful engineer will be responsible for delivering production-ready platform capabilities while helping evolve the architecture of a long-lived system.

About the Platform
The platform currently:
Integrates multiple institutional and research systems
Orchestrates biospecimen collection and laboratory workflows
Normalizes data into a common domain model
Maintains relationships across studies, shipments, kits, biospecimens, and processing events
Serves as the authoritative catalog of biospecimens available to researchers

Current integrations include:
REDCap
SLIMS (Agilent Laboratory Information Management System)
REST-based partner systems

Required Experience
Candidates should demonstrate:
  • 7+ years professional software engineering
  • 5+ years production Ruby on Rails
  • PostgreSQL
  • REST API development
  • Enterprise system integrations
  • Production AWS experience
  • Docker-based development
  • GitHub feature branch workflows
  • CI/CD pipelines
  • Ability to independently own features

Experience with:
  • Higher education systems
  • Healthcare software
  • Research software
  • Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS)
  • Metadata-driven systems
  • AWS CDK
  • Infrastructure as Code
  • GitHub Actions
  • GitHub Copilot
  • Dev Containers
  • Kamal

Candidates should have experience designing software that includes:
  • Idempotent data ingestion
  • Atomic transactions
  • Distributed system integration
  • Data synchronization
  • Error classification
  • Background processing
  • Domain modeling
  • Observability
  • Production monitoring

The ideal engineer:
  • Writes technical designs before coding.
  • Breaks large work into incremental deliveries.
  • Makes pragmatic architectural decisions.
  • Challenges requirements constructively.
  • Improves existing code instead of rewriting it.
  • Works independently.
  • Collaborates effectively through pull requests.
  • Delivers production-quality software.

Candidates should be comfortable:
  • Using GitHub Copilot as part of daily development.
  • Reviewing AI-generated code.
  • Maintaining ownership of software quality.
  • Using AI to accelerate—not replace—engineering work.

An engineer should be able to independently design and implement work such as:
  • Ingest biospecimen shipment information from an external laboratory information management system (SLIMS), normalize that data into the application's domain
  • model, maintain transactional integrity across shipments, kits, and biospecimens, ensure idempotent synchronization, classify retryable versus permanent failures, and expose the resulting data for downstream research systems.

Look for candidates who have worked on:
  • Internal enterprise platforms
  • Research software
  • Healthcare systems
  • Data platforms
  • Integration platforms
  • Long-lived SaaS applications
  • Workflow engines
  • Business-critical operational software
