Job Description
Level Expectations (Important for Screening)
- Operates independently on assigned databases within established standards
- Acts as Primary DBA for applications of moderate complexity
- Performs production support, maintenance, and project tasks
- Participates in on-call rotation and incident response
Core Responsibilities
The DBA II contractor will be responsible for:
- Performing day-to-day database administration and operational support
- Serving as Primary DBA for assigned application databases
- Supporting Microsoft SQL Server and Azure-based database platforms
- Executing database maintenance, monitoring, and performance tuning
- Troubleshooting production issues and participating in root-cause analysis
- Managing backups, restores, and recovery testing to meet RPO/RTO expectations
- Enforcing database security, roles, users, and permissions in accordance with policy
- Maintaining and updating DBA documentation for supported systems
- Partnering with application teams, infrastructure, and security
- Participating in on-call rotation and responding to alerts
Candidates must have hands-on experience with:
- Microsoft SQL Server (production administration)
- Azure SQL platforms (Azure SQL DB and/or SQL Server on Azure IaaS)
- Backup and recovery, including point-in-time restores
- Performance tuning (indexes, queries, resource usage)
- Database security (users, roles, permissions)
- Monitoring and alerting for database health and availability
Operational & Process Expectations
- Follows established DBA standards, processes, and runbooks
- Keeps documentation current for assigned databases
- Supports business continuity through tested backup and recovery procedures
- Communicates technical issues clearly to technical and non-technical partners
- Uses a continuous-improvement mindset while adhering to defined procedures
Required:
- Demonstrated experience as a production DBA or Database Engineer
- Experience supporting enterprise or regulated environments
- Ability to work independently within defined standards
Preferred:
- Prior healthcare, insurance, or regulated-industry experience
- Familiarity with Azure cloud database offerings
- Experience working in on-call or 24×7 support environments
