Job Description
Required Skills & Experience
The Data Center Asset Inventory & Documentation Engineer is responsible for performing a comprehensive physical inventory of data center equipment, including asset details, power connections, network connectivity, cabinet specifications, and visual documentation. The role requires on-site work at customer data centers and close collaboration with IT, facilities, and application stakeholders
Strong hands-on knowledge of:
  • x86/enterprise servers
  • Storage systems/SAN/NAS
  • Network switches and routers
  • Data center rack infrastructure
  • Experience performing physical data center inventory / asset discovery.
  • Experience working with CMDB, ITAM or infrastructure inventory tools.
  • Ability to identify and interpret server, storage and network hardware information.
  • Strong understanding of hardware lifecycle, EOL/EOS and support status.
  • Strong Excel/data reconciliation and reporting skills.
  • Excellent documentation and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently onsite and interact professionally with customer infrastructure teams.
Must have Skills:
  • Experience with ServiceNow CMDB/ITAM or similar platforms.
  • Knowledge of tools such as ServiceNow Discovery, Device42, Lansweeper, SolarWinds or equivalent discovery/inventory platforms.
  • Familiarity with VMware/virtualization environments.
  • Knowledge of enterprise storage technologies such as Dell EMC, NetApp, HPE, Pure Storage or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of enterprise networking technologies such as Cisco, Arista, Juniper, Palo Alto or equivalent.
  • Experience with data center migration, consolidation or transformation assessments.
  • ITIL/CMDB/IT Asset Management experience is a plus.
 
Key Responsibilities
  • Perform detailed inventory assessment of approximately 500 data center devices.
  • Conduct physical validation of equipment, including:
  • Manufacturer and model
  • Serial number
  • Asset/CI ID
  • Rack and location
  • Device role/function
  • Hardware configuration
  • Current operational status
  • Assess and document server infrastructure, including physical and virtual server environments where applicable.
  • Assess storage infrastructure, including storage platforms, arrays, controllers and associated components.
  • Assess network infrastructure, including switches, routers, firewalls and related network equipment.
  • Reconcile physical inventory against existing CMDB, asset database, spreadsheets or other available sources.
  • Identify duplicate, missing, unidentified or inaccurate asset records.
  • Capture available OS, firmware, configuration and lifecycle information.
  • Identify equipment approaching End-of-Life (EOL), End-of-Support (EOS) or requiring further review.
  • Document inventory gaps, inconsistencies and data-quality issues.
  • Work with customer stakeholders and infrastructure teams to validate findings.
  • Develop a consolidated and accurate infrastructure inventory.
  • Prepare assessment findings, observations and recommendations.
  • Support preparation and presentation of the final assessment report.
