Job Description
The AWS Cloud Architect is a hands-on senior technical role at the center of large-scale data center exits. You'll design and personally execute migrations of physical and VMware-based estates into AWS at 1000+ VM scale using AWS Application Migration Service (MGN). You'll also make sure the application stacks running on them, including enterprise middleware, land and run cleanly in AWS.
You'll be in the console and in the code: running MGN replication waves, writing Terraform and CDK, and automating the workflows that make large migration programs repeatable.
Key Responsibilities
Large-Scale Migration with MGN
- Own end-to-end migration of physical servers and VMware VMs into AWS at 1000+ VM scale using Application Migration Service (MGN).
- Run the full MGN lifecycle:
- agent deployment and replication server configuration
- launch templates and post-launch actions
- test launches and validation
- cutover execution and finalization
- Lead discovery and assessment: dependency mapping, right-sizing, and multi-wave planning with rollback criteria.
- Handle OS and driver remediation, disk and boot-mode conversion, and post-cutover validation.
- Troubleshoot replication lag, staging-area, and cutover issues under production change windows.
- Use AWS Transform for VMware to accelerate discovery, wave planning, and network conversion where it fits the estate.
- Support migration of application middleware tiers (WebLogic, WebSphere, JBoss), including installation, configuration, and post-migration validation of domains, clusters, data sources, and deployments.
- Apply security baselines to migrated workloads and remediate findings as part of migration readiness.
IaC & Automation
- Build and maintain target environments and migration tooling in Terraform and AWS CDK, with code review, testing, and CI/CD gates.
- Automate migration and operational workflows in Python using Lambda, Step Functions, EventBridge, and Systems Manager. Examples include MGN orchestration, launch template updates, and post-cutover checks.
- Produce migration runbooks, wave plans, diagrams, and hand-over guides.
Qualifications
- 8+ years designing and operating cloud and data center infrastructure, with deep hands-on AWS experience.
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, or similar.
- AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Professional required.
- Demonstrated experience migrating physical and VMware VMs to AWS at large scale (1000+ VMs) using AWS Application Migration Service (MGN).
- Strong VMware background (vSphere/vCenter, ESXi, VM administration) and comparable depth on physical server estates.
- Strong Infrastructure as Code experience with both Terraform and AWS CDK is required.
- Proficiency in Python; working knowledge of Bash or PowerShell.
- Strong AWS networking fundamentals: VPC design, routing, Transit Gateway, Direct Connect/VPN, DNS.
- Solid Linux and Windows Server administration background.
- Working knowledge of AWS security services (IAM, KMS, Security Hub, GuardDuty) and secure-by-default design.
- Hands-on experience with AWS Transform (including AWS Transform for VMware) is a huge plus.
- Experience installing and configuring enterprise middleware (Oracle WebLogic, IBM WebSphere, Red Hat JBoss/WildFly) is a huge plus. This includes clustering, JDBC/JMS configuration, SSL/certificates, and migrating middleware workloads to AWS.
